Byron Nelson, Gleneagles, Colonial
It's that time of year in the D*FW area. Byron Nelson. Colonial. And, thanks to Custis, I found out last week about Gleneagles hosting the only British Open qualifier on Monday. And, Davis Love III, Ricky Barnes and Fred Couples were supposed to be among those qualifying. Even better ... it's FREE. And, good thing... Greg from Denbury lives down the street from Gleneagles so we don't have to worry about parking. And, good thing... Tom has procured member passes. Don't know what they get us, but we'll take them. Definitely what to do on Monday afternoon!
Get there and pick up a pairing sheet and realize how good a FREE deal this qualifying event is. Freddie isn't there afterall, but how about some of these names: Davis Love III, Bo Van Pelt, Tom Pernice Jr., Charley Hoffman, Bubba Watson, Boo Weekley, Ricky Fowler, Ricky Barnes, Woody Austin, Rory Sabbatini, Ryan Moore, Chad Campbell, Andres Romero, Aaron Baddley, Stuart Appleby, Stephen Ames... 78 players looking for 8 spots.
The great thing about this (besides the free bit) is that there are no ropes and no crowds. You just follow who you want to follow and walk along in the fairways with them. That's what we did for awhile with Stephen Ames (Greg is from Calgary -- Stephen lives in Calgary), Andres Romero (the "kid" who was in the lead of the Masters earlier this year) and ... Kid in the pink shirt whose name escapes me. And then we found the beer tent and settled near a hole nearby for a couple of cold beers and watched people teeing it up on nine and putting in on 10.
I'm definitely in the next two years that Gleneagles hosts this qualifying event.
