New River Gorge Bridge Ride in West Virginia
Disclosure: this is not a live blog and I’m writing it on
June 4 back in Dallas
Wednesday morning the weather is iffy on rain chances and it’s breezy. But, we head out, going through Bluefield up over to 19 into Virginia. Our route does jog us on to Interstate 77 for a bit. And then we have a glitch in the route when we’re really close to the bridge – and it’s pouring and the glitch took us through this odd neighborhood with narrow road with water running over the road. And then back to where we got off. Just a little circle. Riding over the New River Gorge Bridge isn’t that exciting.

We stop at the visitor center, get a sticker and a patch, and check out the scenic overlook. And a deer wearing a bandana, who must be the “resident orphan deer”! We then do the scenic driver on 82 – under the bridge. This was really cool as we looped under the bridge a few times. Some of this ride was one way – but not 100% sure when it was and wasn’t one way. At least it’s not a well-traveled road.
After this ride, we get on Route 60 to head towards
New Gauley Bridge for lunch. This ride is part of the Trail of Dragons. But
Captain Charlies is closed. Tony says that the town has other places. They are
also closed. We head back, and plan on taking the Interstate back to Bluefield.
But, stop at the New River Exxon and Eatery on 60 in Hico – and they have a
grill (New River Exxon and Eatery)
. Great burgers! Rick had their lunch special: hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy, slaw.
I took this picture before we crossed the bridge. And then it was at the Exxon we stopped at! |
Then jog over to
the Interstate – tolls. You pay 75 cents to get on the tollway. Then $4.25 to
get off. This is a pain on the bike, but since we knew about the tolls, I had
two $5 bills in my jacket to pay. In Princeton, we get off the Interstate. I
hate riding on Interstates with all of the semis, and the awful wind bouncing
us around. Stop at Cole Harley Davidson (Cole Harley Davidson)
before heading back to the Comfort Inn.
