Heading to Michigan: Where’s Jason?

Leaving at 12:30 pm is a killer for all of us. We like the 5:00 am flights (kinda). The waiting is awful. Packed and waiting. At least the Open is on at 4:00 am. Tom’s bored and says he’ll be there before 9:00 am to go to the airport, turn in his rental and get to the airport. We’re also OK with early since the day before we had the global Microsoft outage that affected all of the airlines (or at least most of the airlines).

Check in is crowded, maybe still affected by the outage? We get through TSA quickly, find the Admirals Club and watch some Open while waiting on Pete, Levi and Clay (Jason is flying in from Raleigh). They get here and we already find out that Jason may not make it – flight canceled (this after finding out that he’d already rearranged his travel getting back from Alaska on Thursday). This happened to Jason last year and he Ubered to the Mountain. Ubering to the Highlands is even farther. We hang out at the Admirals Club until it’s time to board. I, Jason and then Levi are all upgraded. We board, and then sit and sit and sit – plane doesn’t work? Two hours later, we’re off.

Admirals Club for a couple of drinks, snacks and The Open!

Get in to Traverse City and get our cars and our bags. Jason is definitely not making it in today. Tomorrow, hopefully getting in by the time we tee off on Arthur Hills (we all hope). We go to dinner on the way to the Highlands, stopping at Torch Lake Café in Eastport (https://torchlakecafe.com/) – pretty good salads for all of us except Pete, who has fish (and chips, I think). My salad was very “berry forward.”

Summertime Salad: Revolution Farms Great Lakes Greens, Fresh Berries, Cucumbers, Candied Walnuts, Honey Goat Cheese, Sunflower Seeds, Dried Cherries, Apple Walnut Vinaigrette

Stop for ice cream at the Dairy Grille and meet some dogs in Charlevoix (of course)!

And then to the grocery store to load up on Monsters, Better Made Butter Braided Pretzels and Beer.

Check in this year at the Highlands at the Discovery Center (they bake fresh cookies there!). We’re staying at the Inn this time, not cabins or condos. These are “loft suites” with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, right in front of the main lodge. Accommodations are good – a little odd for the set up, but perfectly fine. As long as we have a place to sleep, make coffee in the morning, and head out. Tom and I are in agreement on the temperature inside – I have it set for 65 degrees.

Found a new seltzer from Finland of all places, the Long Drink (no sugar)

Note: I am not a photographer, nor do I try to be one. I hire photographers. Excuse the crappy photos!
