Late start (we put tags on our new rescue, Freddy, and he
was acting weird), but off we went with the loaded truck, trailer and
motorcycle to Raton, New Mexico (drive 576 miles). It’s drizzling when we leave,
but then stops and is just overcast. 30 to 820 to 35W over to 287. And then on
287 A LONG TIME. In Texas A LONG TIME.
First stop at QuikTrip in Wichita Falls (really weird road
over railroad tracks to get to). 144 miles. Then after a bit, I start driving
to Amarillo (about 225 miles). Really long, straight roads, not a lot of
traffic and I don’t mind driving the truck and trailer on roads like this.
Plenty of signs that Buc-ee’s is now open in Amarillo (https://buc-ees.com/)! Stop at All Sups for
their famous burritos.
Pass Cadillac Ranch -- it's really not that big, right on the Interstate (I believe this part of the Interstate is also 87 and Route 66).

Then QuikTrip in Amarillo before our way to Raton, New
Mexico (about 215 miles). Basically, Tascosa Road to 385 to 87. The Robin Hood
Motel is just off 87/25. Pretty boring drive except through small towns
(sometimes it doesn’t even seem to be a town, just a road, but it goes from 75
to 70 to 60 to 55 to 45 and sometimes to 30 in about the span of a mile).
The Robin Hood Motel ((1354 S Second Street, Raton, New
Mexico (575-445-5577, www.robinhoodmotelusa.com)
doesn’t look like much, but came recommended on the Motorcycle Maps Facebook
page – and Mandy was super nice when I booked the rooms and asked about leaving
the truck and trailer there. The Robin Hood Motel is one of the cleanest
motels/hotels/inns we have ever stayed at! The beds were nice and firm. The
interior was a bit vintage (not sure about carpet chair rails, but they make
sense). We parked the truck and trailer in a field (habited by a buck and a
doe!).

We broke our chain restaurant rule and had dinner at a
really cold Denny’s down the street (Tony says they keep them cold so you don’t
linger – he had to get his hoody off the bike for me to put on).
Sleep and then on the road to Golden, Colorado, in the
morning.
