State #24 - Idaho! |
We get up early and watch some of the Open (even through our
first-floor bedroom window at the Doubletree that we opened to pass our luggage
through to the bike to load up – we’re efficient like that). No free breakfast
at the Doubletree Hotel, so we head out to gas up at the Exxon/7-11. A Triumph
hot air balloon was going up as we were heading out.

Hwy 40 to Interstate 80 to Interstate 84. In Brigham City,
we get on 89 that becomes 191 for a bit. The Interstate ride wasn’t bad, not great.
Pretty scenic. Pretty windy. Pretty chilly! Near Ogden, we stop at a rest area
and find out that Peter Ogden, a Morman colonizer, has a mountain, a river, and
the city of Odgen named after him. We also find out that there is a Weber
County, and Fairgrounds. And lots of Weber stuff.

Some Weber facts per Wikipedia: Weber (/ˈwiːbər/ WEE-bər) is a county in
Utah (fourth-most populous) with its largest city being Ogden, also the home of
Weber State University. Named after fur trapper John Weber. The Weber Valley
was visited by many trappers seeking beavers and muskrats along its streams.

Road to ourselves out in Utah interstate |
Our scenic map app has been glitching and around Logan she
keeps wanting us to take random turns in random neighborhoods. We stay on
Highway 91, gas up at the Maverick (https://www.maverik.com/
). Maverick seems to be these state’s go-to service brand. And then we pass
into Idaho we’re so turned around by everything with our app (and I am really
regretting not bringing my bag of paper maps!). Of course we turn around, ride
back into Utah and then back into Idaho to get a picture of the sign. We were
in Utah, then Idaho, then Utah, then Idaho today! And, the Utah sign is
different here so we get a bonus.

And back into Idaho! |
Finally, in Franklin, Idaho, Tony pulls over, shuts her off,
and pulls up our hotel in Idaho Falls. We’re less than 130 miles away. Take 91
to Interstate 15 and that takes us right to our hotel. The ride on 91 in Idaho
is pretty farmland, with cows and horses (oh, I saw a herd of bison on
Interstate 84). I don’t know what potato farms look like, but we’ll go with
some of them being potato fields.
About 50 miles from Idaho Falls, we stop for lunch at Elmers
(https://eatatelmers.com/ ). We had
breakfast for lunch in Pocatello (home of Idaho State University).

And then to
Idaho Falls, stopping at Grand Teton Harley Davidson (https://tetonharley.com/ ) on the way (it’s
on the same street as our hotel). Tony gets a T-shirt with a potato riding a
motorcycle! They didn’t have one in my size, but it’s funny! And we get a poker
chip (our first from Idaho). Now I realize I don’t think we have one from Utah.
Oh well. I don’t think we were near any Harley Davidson dealerships on our Utah
rides.
Check into our Hampton Inn (Hampton Inn/Idaho
Falls/Airport, 645 Lindsay Boulevard, Idaho Falls, ID 83402). And then Tony
looks at his back tire and it looks pretty worn. We don’t know if all of this
interstate riding at 80 mph has worn it out? We call Grand Teton Harley
Davidson and they said if we can get there “now” they can replace it. This is
great because looking at our schedule, on our “rest day” in Missoula, the
Missoula Harley Davidson dealer (Grizzly Harley Davidson) is closed on Sundays
(a new tire, and brake pads will make the riding much better on Beartooth and
some of our next rides). Tony heads over while I stay at the hotel (we’re maybe
a half mile away). Thank you Grand Teton Harley Davidson!

Never leave home without your paper maps (I did, but got a new one) |
I see that Scottie Scheffler is the leader (-10) in the
final group with Matt Fitzpatrick on Saturday at The Open! If I had a hot spot
with ATT we could watch on Hulu on the ride on Saturday. May still try it out.

Bonus video 2 (Tony making fun of my love for maps):
Tomorrow: Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Missoula, Montana. We were
going to hammer up Interstates 15 and 90. About 320 miles. But, we changed our
minds and are now taking 28 into Salmon and then 93 into Missoula. It's only
302 miles – but no interstates and a couple we met outside the hotel in Moab
said it was really curvy near Salmon. Going to be a good day!
Note: I am not a photographer and most of the photos and
videos are taken while riding on the back of a moving motorcycle.
